| Location: | Boulder, CO, United States | | About artist: | Professional artist working out of Boulder, Colorado, studied painting in New York (MFA 1999). | | About art: | Many of my images are painted on the spot, out in the open, while others are done from memory or from a model in the studio, and still others are based on photographs. It is important for me to unify these approaches, so that it is difficult to tell which paintings were done by which methods. I am interested in specific types of attention that are involved in situations of looking. For instance, if we are driving, a traffic light is an important cue, as is an oncoming car. If we are walking, we need to pay attention to obstructions in our path so that we do not trip. If we have a dog, maybe we notice open fields more, as a possible place to play. For a bicyclist, an open car door is a reminder that any door can open any time. As I look out at an area while I am painting, I try to spend time on items that will go with the point of view set up in my painting so far. The very beginning of a painting is therefore a wide-open field with every possibility available. Gradually combining familiar sets of cues produces familiar-seeming landscapes. A sense of reality is evoked through groups of referents rather than a strictly photographic look. Together, my act of painting and your act of viewing the paintings stimulate our common memories of driving, walking, bicycling, looking. | |
